Trent & Mersey Canal
Conservation Area Character Statement
The Trent & Mersey Canal runs through several counties and includes a number of joined-up conservation areas. The section that runs through Derbyshire is one continuous linear conservation area, which takes in a number of settlements along its length, many of which grew in association with the development of the canal and its associated industries.
As part of the Conservation Area Character Statement, we produced a detailed summary of all canal mileposts and bridges. This thematic record helped inform us how the canal had evolved and the original bridges & mileposts and later developments, all useful for identifying appropriate methods of repair.
